The rain for this week was predicted to be pretty heavy, so we were prepared just in case, but as it actually got closer, it seemed the worst would be on the 24th, and then lighter rain on the 25th. We still planned to take parkas and umbrellas, but that morning it was dry and the forecast said there might be some light rain in the afternoon, but not a steady all-day thing, so when we got to the park we actually ended up leaving the parkas and umbrellas in the car.

* Could not get Assassin's Creed 2 to work, as the Ubisoft launcher demanded a CD key that Steam did not have in evidence. Also it does not seem to support controller and I did not feel like trying to parkour on keyboard and mouse. Refunded.

* Enjoyed my first hour or so of Fallout New Vegas vastly more than Skyrim; it's built on the same engine, but the lighting is significantly better, the movement feels less clunky, the combat has a semi-paused option, and frankly I'm a lot more comfortable in a postapocalyptic Southwestern version of the 1950s than in yet another Tolkien knockoff. Also I *may* have figured out how to view my map and inventory? Unsure. I accidentally bought the version that doesn't include $20 worth of DLC for $2.50, and there doesn't seem to be an upgrade option, so I have requested an exchange on that, but I expect to keep it around and fiddle with it off and on.

* Then I tried out the demo for Powerwash Simulator. I've been hesitant to drop $12.50 on sale for a single game (I mean, I can afford it because I've refunded so many games I still have most of that gift card; I think the only game I've actually kept so far was Portal and that was $2), but I just spent most of two hours in the first level and a quarter, so it seems very good value for the money. It's soothing, unhurried, and you can't take fall damage when you accidentally walk off a roof, plus there's even a bunch of free DLC.

Things are a little up and down, but I got two really lovely Yuletide gifts, so making sure to note them here: What Abigail Did When She Housesat, a Rivers of London fic with wonderful Abigail and Indigo and an absolutely inspired original character of sorts creating the plot, and Names Give Us Away, which is exactly what I wanted with regard to Rachel Abramoff at the Crater School. It's gift card season and there are a couple sorts of books I would like to get with mine, but I don't even know what sorts of terms to start searching on.

1) Something about different legal systems and the philosophies that go with them. How they shape how people think about what the law is even for, and so forth. Would prefer to focus on modern systems, but historical examples are fine if they help illuminate the present. (E.g. I have come across mentions a few times that things work in such and such a way in France or its former colonies because they were shaped by the Napoleonic code.)

2) How the governments of really huge cities/metropoles work.

Blogs or newsletters are okay too. But no podcasts or YouTube series unless they're scripted, please.

My first (and so far only) assumption is that since one’s stash of money was so precious, something that must be guarded at all times, analogically his “gentleman-ness” was the most sacred part of his being, his inner core, and therefore most important for him to maintain. But I may be off base here.

Ever come across this use of “purse” before? Google didn’t help me.

I had not, so I thought I’d place the question before the Varied Reader. Ideas? (I might add that The Big Bow Mystery has apparently been called “the first full-length locked room mystery”; maybe I should give it a try.)

People say...

- that you could prop up a tabletop rigid heddle loom between your legs and the table's edge. Sure, but perhaps not this one, which is palm-sized.

- that you need multiple shafts to weave certain motifs. It's like saying that you need a bed frame, boxspring, and foam mattress for sleeping, or chairs with rigid frames and a table of a certain height for eating a meal. You might like having them, you might consider them status markers, your cultural expectations may've blocked off other options, but one does not need them in an absolute sense.

Here's Kyoung Ae Cho preparing to weave houndstooth using a backstrap and several sets of string heddles. A meaningful percentage of the work is completed during the warping stage.

(If her setup goes too fast in that video, try her basic setup howto. It shows the interim uses of lease sticks and which things are tied provisionally, then undone. What she does is unfamiliar to me but looks much like the setup used by a Kazakh weaver whose reels Instagram keeps tossing my way---a Kazakh weaver who's a quarter ethnic Korean by heritage, part of the Koryo-saram community. Coincidence? I've no idea.)

- that you need multiple shafts, part two: here's someone with Atelier Fagelbo (Japan) weaving basic houndstooth with a rigid heddle on a tabletop/box loom. They don't show how to dress the loom because they'd like you to buy the loom and their many photo pages of directions (no thanks), but it is proof of concept.

- that you mustn't fuss with the warp (except to repair a broken warp thread) once a loom has been dressed and weaving has begun. I've undone the basic knotted warp from the large 8-dent heddle that shipped with my 10" Beka beginner frame, rethreaded the warp through a heddle with the right size of reed (12 dent), and added a few weft rows to what was provided by Beka staff. Much better. The original plan was to use someone else's warp and not only learn but save my hands. An 8-dent heddle with what looks like #4 or #8 cotton is pretty clunky. (#10 cotton, only slightly thinner, is "bedspread cotton" for mid-C20 crochet patterns.)

While putting away bags and wrapping paper and tissue paper and such, I went through the whole bag of previously-used Christmas paper culling pieces that were too small or crumpled or that I just didn't like or didn't think we would use. (We are a "try to get multiple uses out of at least some of the paper" household.)

Also I guess the Epiphany season technically starts at Epiphany, Catholicly, but then, the Christmas season technically starts at Christmas, and the modern American Christmas season very clearly starts before Christmas and runs up to Christmas, when it's Catholic Advent, so I'm sticking with Disadvent and Disepiphany (and there is no Dischristmas).

Eric had surgery last Friday and needed to have someone accompany him and stay with him for twenty-four hours afterward. The aftercare turned out to be a bit more intense than expected afterward, and so I ended up staying at his place all weekend to assist him.

We were very quiet together. It occurred to me on Sunday, as we sat together in his living room, drinking coffee and looking out the living room window at the winter landscape, that it was the winter Solstice. A year ago on the winter Solstice, I was hosting a solstice party. If I had been at home, I would have lit all my candles to mark the day. Being with him on that day as he was recovering seemed fitting.

The winter solstice is a time for deep rest and healing, for reflection and resilience.

He is feeling much better now and counts the surgery as a success.

Merry Christmas! And Happy Yuletide! I have had a startlingly straightforward time here, with lots of singing and cooking and family but no drama at all.

And I have three wonderful gifts in Yuletide, two that appeared in the main collection and one total surprise that showed up at the very last minute in Madness, all of them so beautifully tailored to my likes, I can't praise them enough.

Happiness In Time Of Joy, a Wimsey fic, some utterly adorable missing scenes just before Lord Peter and Harriet get married, featuring Gherkins being himself in full measure.

Double Exposure, another Wimsey fic, 17k of fantastic Peter/Harriet/Bunter casefic, with ghosts of WW1 and excellent period details and a beautiful get-together for my OT3.

Wandrers Nachtlied, a total surprise in Yuletide Madness, a 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' fic - which I've requested many years and never got before - with such a clever play on the non-linear narrative of the film, but with the Clive/Theo made even more central to it all, a gorgeous look at them both.

Every year I am totally astounded by the work people put in to making such generous and thoughtful gifts. Thank you, dear anonymous authors!

We had our usual quiet Christmas Day: stockings, family zoom, salmon-elevenses, roast bird dinner with my brother Jonny, a silly film (Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon). I even managed to drag the children out to the park for an hour or so before dinner, including some table tennis and frisbee.

One of my personal Christmas traditions is watching the Nutcracker, usually in a cinema broadcast, and I just couldn't make that work this winter. So I was really charmed to find a broadcast of the Royal Ballet's production on iPlayer; the advantage of watching it at home is that I can have a quiet chat with my brother alongside without bothering anyone else.

This morning I woke up nice and early and headed out for another of my booked hot yoga sessions, followed by dropping in on my old friend Shaun for a long-overdue catchup. This afternoon has mostly been reading and TV, and the evening will probably continue the same way.
