Goodnight and Goodbye, 2025

I've been in pain all day, and the hours kind of ate up all the wonderful things I wanted to tell all of you.

I'll say more tomorrow, but for now, just know that I cherish all of you, and I hope that your New Years Eve will be, is being, or has been, as quiet or raucous as you want or wanted it to be.

I am so lucky to know all of you.

And may 2026 be good for all of us.

All my love,

on new year’s eve by Evie Shockley

we make midnight a maquette of the year:
frostlight glinting off snow to solemnize
the vows we offer to ourselves in near
silence: the competition shimmerwise

of champagne and chandeliers to attract
laughter and cheers: the glow from the fireplace
reflecting the burning intra-red pact
between beloveds: we cosset the space

of a fey hour, anxious gods molding our
hoped-for adams with this temporal clay:
each of us edacious for shining or
rash enough to think sacrifice will stay

this fugacious time: while stillness suspends
vitality in balance, as passions
struggle with passions for sway, the mind wends
towards what’s to come: a callithump of fashions,

ersatz smiles, crowded days: a bloodless cut
that severs soul from bone: a long aching
quiet in which we will hear nothing but
the clean crack of our promises breaking.

[I have been trying to get my drink on since 3 pm and finally have a glass in my hand. Kind of fitting for the year.]

Word count for 2025: 260,487

For 2026: My only writing goals are to 1. finish my Rear Window AU on 13 Jun 2026 and 2. to do at least one fill for 2026 Spook Me.

Reading: 72 books, which is up 13 from last year. I finished [personal profile] kingstoken's bingo and I got one line of [personal profile] garonne's bingo.

For 2026: I want to finish the Rebus series (I have the last two from the library already checked out) and finish my All of Agatha in January 2027. My main goal, however, it to keep a simple reading log, which will include the basic info about the book and one sentence of my opinion/observation of it. I feel like I read things (or more often listen to audiobooks) and I don't recall anything. So I want to be a bit (not as much as many people, but more than I do now which is nothing) more mindful.

Crafting: I did crafty Xmas gifts for 3 friends. Also 20 Xmas cards!

For 2026: My only goal is to be more mindful/one-pointed when I craft so I can enjoy the process of creating. And a resolution to keep the collaging out of my planner to reduce the bulk. I stopped using my planner by the autumn because it got too bulky because of the collage layers so collaging is going in journals for that purpose and the planner will have the occasional sticker.

Health & Fitness: I don't want to dwell too much on weight in case it's triggering for anyone but I put on weight this year. And I was disappointed in my performance at the Turkey Trot. I did try pickleball, and I like it, but I only have so many hours on the day. I would like to have a resolution about pickleball, but I just can't see myself committing to it meaningfully. I did Yoga with Adriene regularly (meaning more than half the days of a given month) so I am going to continue with that. I do believe honestly that regular stretching is a key component of not feeling like shit every day.

For 2026: Get the weight off so I can finally go to the doctor for a checkup (I haven't been to a doctor in 11 years. They're going to tell me to lose the weight, tell me I have high cholesterol and diabetes and who knows what else.). And I want to be able to run (read: jog, I don't actually RUN) the full Turkey Trot. That I can commit to as a goal. But the real goal is not the weight but to eat in freedom which means getting my binging under control and making better choices.

Personal: God, I survived so much this year. The boys' father losing his job when USAID was closed and working himself day and night to get 2 years of private funding. Saying goodbye to okapi car (which still HURTS). The leaks and the roof collapsing.

BUT

I got a job! When I think about how daunting the prospect of anything else is (like losing the weight) the counter logic I use is BUT YOU GOT A JOB! I never thought ANYONE would hire me. I'm so fucking useless on paper, and mostly in reality, too, but nevertheless I have a job. So that was a miracle. And it has changed my life completely. For the better.

For 2026: Plan the Okapi invasion (my UK trip). I'm thinking it'll probably happen in spring 2027 but I want it booked and planned by the end of 2026. My sister may be going with me! Taking care of old people who have lost their mobility and have so many limitations has made me realize I need to get serious with this bucket list and 221B Baker Street is #1 place in the entire world I want to see before I die. So I am thinking I am going to take 10-20% more hours a month (I don't want to overwhelm myself or cramp the logistics of two busy boys) to help save money for it.

My sister got me the gorgeous Botancia tarot deck (which I was first introduced to on DW during 3 weeks 4 dreamwidth: https://www.beehivebooks.com/products/botanica) so I want to get more familiar with that. I don't really see myself as a fortune teller but rather think of them as tools for reflection and introspection and creativity in some cases.

I had a conversation with the boys' father today and we are not moving this year. He has done some research and there aren't any cheaper places in our area so we've sticking with the devil we know for now.

Of course, I want to save money over all because the price of things is going up but that isn't a very specific goal. I have a goal for weekly grocery spending but it's a serious stretch goal at the moment.

Spiritual: I don't usually talk about my spiritual life here because I don't want to offend anyone but I've been meditating every morning for the past 23 years so I am finally ready to add an evening meditation to my routine. The bedtime routine I have now is serious shit. But my ego is definitely going to put up a fight (multiple fights) but I hope to establish a healthier bedtime routine by the end of the year.

So 2025 was a tough year (BUT I HAVE A JOB!). I want 2026 to be about devotion, kindness, patience and perseverance, and mindfulness.

Hope everyone is/has rung out the new year in whatever way suits you!

Over the last few days I have been reading lots of Dreamwidth; I'm now caught up to the 19th of December, which is as up-to-date as I think I've been since April.

I have also had a toasted sandwich lunch on a park bench with A, under a clear blue sky; quietly played several games; and, eventually, made a start on setting up next year's notebook.

Thank you for sharing your lives with me. <3

[I think this is the same situation as in [personal profile] conuly's last post but with more details]

Dear Eric: My husband and I have been together for 11 years. He has one daughter, 43, with two young children I adore and have been close to until last summer when the volcano erupted.

Since the beginning of our relationship, I have made every effort to be loving and generous to his daughter. She acts entitled and ungrateful to me.

It’s my fault for not standing up for myself early in my joining the family. For example, I wish to be thanked for gifts, babysitting, making holidays happen, having them over for dinner and so on.

She doesn’t seem to care about me at all. Her father will not stand up to her and seems scared of her.

Last summer I blew up at her in a text and let her know how I feel about her behavior.

I called her a manipulative user and let her know my truth which is certainly not her truth. I apologized twice in two letters for being so harsh, but she will not forgive me, allow a repair or let me see the grandkids. Her father will not help. This is hurting our marriage.

I miss the little ones terribly and cried for months about this. Yes, I am in therapy and hoping my husband will go to couples counseling together. Funny, he is a psychotherapist. I would be most appreciative if you can offer us your help.

— Missing Family

Family: Ask yourself what you have the power to change and what you need to accept, even if you don’t like it.

For instance, you probably should accept that the relationship with your husband’s daughter is not serving either one of you right now. And it’s probably because her relationship with your husband is not healthy. It’s likely that some of the frustration you’re feeling stems from a desire to change something that’s outside of your control.

You write that your husband won’t help you. If you want him to compel his daughter to accept your apology, that might not actually be useful. Unfortunately, even though your relationship with the grandkids was, perhaps, healthy, the other relationships supporting it are less so.

So, what can you change? Well, you’re doing the most important first step by working on yourself in therapy. If your husband won’t go to couples counseling (which he should), ask him why and ask him how he proposes to help you both communicate better.

*wraps hands around mug of tea*

I just got back from my midnight walk - like every year when I'm spending New Year's Eve alone (which is most years), I went out half an hour before midnight, walked into the old town, and watched the fireworks. I wore the new coat I got just a few days ago - it's warmer than my existing one, and I wanted it for the very cold days. Which, uh, today actually wasn't, so I ended up pretty toasty. But still, tea! *g*

*belatedly remembers to clink glasses mugs*

Happy new year, everyone!

I hope you had a good slide*, or will have one if it's still in the future for you!

*) That's the idiom here - in advance, you wish people "einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr", a good slide into the new year. There are different explanations for it, but there's attested 19th century slang where sliding is used for travelling/going somewhere, so that makes the most sense to me.

Click for a larger, sharper image

I didn't have much to do this morning, so I went into town for coffee at the George. They had the fires on, which was nice – one is my 365 photo for today – although I actually got a bit too warm as I was dressed for December! A pleasant day today, actually: a light frost early on but then much more sunshine than we've seen on most days recently. I got about 12,000 steps in, which was pleasing. My daily average is up around 10,000 again, which is where I like it to be.

Anyway, I'll be otherwise engaged at midnight, so I wish everyone here a very Happy New Year! I hope 2026 brings you the best it possibly can. :)

Well, as predicted, [community profile] rec_cember went straight off a cliff, lol. I mean, to be fair, I was traveling for half the month, most of that time with other people, but I still hoped to get in another rec post or two than I actually did.

But I'll close out 2025 by reccing some vids! Since I got back into watching vids this past year, there are a bunch of new-to-me ones to share. For the Tumblr ones, since it now defaults to dash view (which you need to be logged in to see) I've tried to provide a non-logged-in version where possible.

We Didn't Start the Fire by [personal profile] beccatoria - ATLA & Legend of Korra
There aren't very many canons that are long, varied, and epic enough to vid to this song, but this works really well and the clip selection is A++.

Ice Cream Man by [archiveofourown.org profile] Pennyplainknits - Stranger Things season 3
I had a lot of problems with season 3 and Steve's sailor outfit was definitely one of them, but this is a very cute, fun, and playful vid about it!

80s horror summer by [youtube.com profile] legallybrunette1997 - 70s/80s slasher movies
Great editing and really goes for the retro vibe!

Human by [personal profile] kaydeefalls - X-Men movies, Mystique
I'm going through a nostalgia phase for these movies after rewatching the first two back in October, and this is a lovely vid that does a great job with Mystique's arc across the various movies.

Pink Pony Club by [www.tumblr profile] torchwood-99 - Torchwood, Gwen [Non-logged-in Tumblr link]
A wonderfully edited vid that does a fantastic job using the song lyrics to tell the two sides to Gwen's story on the show: she discovers her true calling and blossoms when the secret world of aliens opens up to her, but loses some of her humanity along the way.

Shake It Out by [www.tumblr profile] delovelie - Babylon 5 (major spoilers) [Non-logged-in Tumblr link)
A vid about breaking and getting up again.

Anti-Hero by [www.tumblr profile] cynicalangel80 - Babylon 5, Londo [Non-logged-in Tumblr link]
Great tragilarious vid about Londo's general everything.

What Was I Thinkin' by [archiveofourown.org profile] tafadhali - Star Wars OT, Han/Leia
A fun, bouncy vid set to honky tonk country that (surprisingly? unsurprisingly?) works really well for Han Solo.

If I Had $1,000,000 by [archiveofourown.org profile] januarium - Schitt's Creek
This canon/song pairing is INSPIRED and the editing and lip-syncing is great.

A couple of words that struck me while rummaging through my new Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate (see this post):

1) trough ‘a long shallow often V-shaped receptacle for the drinking water or feed of domestic animals’: pronunciations ˈtrȯf, ˈtrȯth, by bakers often ˈtrō. It never would have occurred to me that it was anything but the first (/trɔf/); has anybody heard the others?

2) jerrican ‘a narrow flat-sided container for liquids usually holding about five U.S. gallons (about 19 liters)’: etymology Jerry + can; from its German design. Who knew?

And a very happy new year to all those who follow the Gregorian calendar!

Welp, I did not post these as regularly this year as I'd hoped but I can at least round out 2025 with a final, on-time entry. I hope everyone is had/is having/will have a good end to 2025, as appropriate for your part of the world!

What I Finished Reading This Week

Holly, Reindeer, and Colored Lights - Edna Barth
This book is a nostalgic holiday reread for me. It's part frustrating (no, druids did not worship Thor or Odin) and fascinating (as a snapshot of what popular knowledge about niche topics looked like in the pre-Internet age). While the presumed audience and focus is largely continental North American christian culture, these books may very well have been the first place I ever heard about Puerto Rico, or Bolivia, or the Sami, and therefore played a part in interesting me in the world. “In the African Republic of Ghana, groups of Christian families buy cows, sheep, and goats to be slaughtered for the Christmas feast. Among Christians of Abyssinia a favorite Christmas dish is raw meat” reads one paragraph in the nine-page “Christmas Feasting” chapter. As a child, Abyssinia would have seemed like an impossibly far off place, wondrously unlike anything in my daily life. Today, I know that Abyssinia is just Ethiopia and Eritrea and the “raw meat” from that Christmas dish is just kitfo, and I can walk out my front door and order it at over half-a-dozen restaurants in less than 15 minutes. Which is in itself its own kind of wondrous.

Irish Tin Whistle Tutorial vol. 1 – Mary Bergin
Mary Bergin is one of the marquee players of this instrument. As this is just the first volume of three, I can't meaningfully compare her entire method to other tutors on the market, but it is hands down the most thorough introduction to tonguing patterns anywhere--a vital element that's often given short shrift by other instructors.

Irish Legends for Children – Yvonne Carroll & Lucy Su
This book contains six retellings of Irish legends, including The Children of Lir, two from the Ulster Cycle, and three from the Fenian Cycle. The retellings are nicely done and a good way to introduce the stories to younger readers, and the illustrations very attractive. Carroll gives the names in Irish with proper diacritics and doesn't bother with a pronunciation guide, a refreshing or frustrating choice, depending on the reader.

Guarded Time 2 - Stephanie Hansen
This book opens in media res but doesn't follow up with much explanation for dozens of characters, concepts, and situations--not even an information dump, let alone subtler explication woven into the story. And while this is the second volume in its series, it's the seventh in the "suggested reading order" of Hansen's previous books, and given that multiple chapters in Guarded Time begin with epigraphs from those books, anyone who really wants to know whats going on probably would need to read those as well. Hansen clearly loves her characters and plot, but potential readers should probably start at the top of that list.

Ruby and the Stone Age Diet – Martin Millar
I opened 2025 by reading Millar's second novel and closed it by reading this one, his third. It's a much trickier novel than its predecessor: like most of Millar's works it seems straightforward, even superficial, until you start to realize how deadly clever it is. Almost too clever in places; Millar's satire can deadpan I suspect it's flown over the head of many an oblivious reader. He's also starting to experiment this with themes and elements that will pop up again in his later works, and while they don't always work as well here, it's very cool to see them in their embryonic forms. This is definitely worth reading, and I will definitely read it again.

The Tailor of Gloucester – Beatrix Potter
Probably my favorite of Potter’s books. The illustrations are just stunning.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever – Barbara Robinson
An annual reread. There are many people in the world right now who I think need to read this book...alas, they wouldn't get the point even if they did.

Nimona – ND Stevenson
Being a graphic novel in which Severus Snape teams up with a Murder Pixie Dream Girl to fight the system. As I was in a "fuck the system" mood all week, this suited me perfectly. It is one of those books that somehow transcends the sum of its parts, and I'm glad I finally read it. As a bonus, the omake at the end make it a seasonal read too.

Celtic Knotwork Handbook – Sheila Sturrock
I don't recommend starting with Sturrock's method when learning to draw Celtic knotwork, as it's prone to generating knots with inconsistent cord widths and interlacing that violates design conventions in historic examples. That said, it is useful for plotting groups of connected panels with negative space between them. And it absolutely shines when drafting zoomorphic patterns; in fact, it's the best method for doing so that I've found anywhere.

What I Am Currently Reading

The Stations of the Sun – Ronald Hutton
The first chapters start ahead of the Christmas season, so I'm a bit behind, but that's fine.

The Bright Sword – Lev Grossman
This is looking to become one of my annual winter reads.

Hymn to Dionysus – Natasha Pulley
Three chapters in I'm liking it quite a bit.

What I’m Reading Next

This week I acquired Peter Heller's The Dog Stars Ronald Hutton's , Coinneach MacLeod's The Scottish Cookbook, Mike Parker Pearson's Stonehenge: A Brief History, and Malene Sølvsten's Mannaz.

For my last post of 2025 I feel it is incumbent upon me to talk about the wildest television show I watched in 2025, the kdrama Genie, Make A Wish.

The high-level premise of this show: a GENIE, who is also SATAN, has been IMPRISONED for ONE THOUSAND YEARS because he's supposed to seduce humans into CORRUPTING THEMSELVES and instead he met a PURE SOUL who used her WISHES FOR GOOD and caused him to LOSE his BARGAIN with GOD.

Now! he has met her REINCARNATION! however! instead of being a PURE INGENUE WAIF! the reincarnation is an ETHICAL SOCIOPATH who has been STRICTLY TRAINED in NOT MURDERING PEOPLE by her BELOVED GRANDMOTHER! and whose first reaction on meeting a magical immortal genie is 'at last! someone I can ethically shove off a building!!'

(This meeting happens in Dubai, btw. The show is very obviously at least in part sponsored by the Tourism Board of Dubai and the cast are frequently hopping back and forth there to Shop Our Beautiful Bazaars and speak in variably competent Arabic; however, as a result, this means the backstory involves historical trade routes! the last time I saw that was in Queen Seondeok!)

ANYWAY, now, the challenge is on: will ethical sociopath Ki Ka-young be CORRUPTED by SATAN the GENIE? or will she once again make SELFLESS WISHES and condemn the genie to have his THROAT SLIT by an ANGRY ANGEL OF DEATH?

There are also some side characters! People in Ki Ka-young's orbit include her SAINTLY GRANDMOTHER and her BEST FRIEND, a LESBIAN DENTIST. People in the genie's orbit include his GIANT PANTHER MINION, the ANGRY ANGEL OF DEATH, and a SMALL BOY who consistently beats him in Mortal Kombat. There are also some LOCAL COTTAGECORE YOUTUBERS, a circle of ADDITIONAL JUDGMENTAL GRANNIES, a RELATIVELY UNIMPORTANT SERIAL KILLER, an EVIL IMMORTAL CHILD, and DANIEL HENNEY, in a role that I will not spoil except under a cut )

Let me be clear: is this drama good? no, I do not think so. Do I have arguments with its determinations about what does and does not count as a selfless wish? sure. Did I enjoy it? TREMENDOUSLY. Did I at any point have any idea what was going to happen next in this absolute mad libs of a plot? NEVER ONCE.

however, the thing that made me shriek most about the drama is a major mid-show spoiler regarding Beloved Grandma )

First of all, I finished the Murderbot gen action WIP that I've been posting in installments. (It also ended up being the longest thing I've put on AO3 since 2022 ...)

Combat System Critical (Murderbot TV-verse, 20K wds, gen)
SecUnit is on Preservation when an attempted assassination on a PresAux team member turns a quiet retreat at a backwater university into a fight for survival.

Brief spoilery notes on the Murderbot ficI've had the idea of Gurathin's augments allowing him to survive being shot in the head with an energy weapon since I've been writing fic in this fandom, so that was the detail on which this plot pivoted. Of course then it took me absolutely ages to actually get to that part! I was a little worried that some other fic would do it in the meantime, and honestly I'm a little surprised that no one has.

And my annual New Year's fic is up! Babylon 5 this time.

Five Kisses at the New Year (Babylon 5, 4300 wds, mostly gen)
What it says on the tin. 2257 to 2278.

Brief spoilery notes on the B5 ficI went back and forth on whether to keep the final Londo & G'Kar scene (or maybe include it as apocryphal, or an outtake), and end on the hopeful note of Lochley and the new Ambassadors instead. That final scene is just pure self-indulgence (and maybe a bit of emotional h/c), but I decided to keep it; is it really a proper B5 fic if it doesn't stab you in the heart at some point?

I also liked the idea of doing B5 for my New Year's fic this year since the show itself is arranged around the turn of the year.
